Six Sentence Sunday: Part of the Night: The Wayne Legacy

Part of the Night: The Wayne Legacy

BookWorm's Library | Ao3

Jim Gordon stared at the Bat as it disappeared behind the skyscrapers. He had noted that Batman appeared when Bruce Wayne returned from the dead nearly a decade ago, but he fell for the playboy antics like the rest of the city, until Wayne protected the police SUV from the desperate man obeying the Joker. Coleman Reese developed amnesia on Batman's identity after that. And then there was Wayne's reaction to Dent and Dawes' deaths.

It was obvious if you looked deep enough, but Gordon decided then he wouldn't pry for the sake of their friendship. And he would hide Batman's identity for their friendship too.

Summary: Batman is dead and everyone else must pick up the pieces of Gotham City.

The sequel to the One Rule. The Part of the Night series started way back in 2013 and while my muse was happily skipping along with this happens next and that leads to this scene, the nuts 'n bolts part of my brain realized in the outlining stage that chopping in half was the best way to go. End the first novel with the bomb's detonation and the second novel would cover the reconstruction of Gotham. The outline was deceptively simply with that metric. With hindsight of having finished the rough draft and edits, if I had followed my normal practice of write-edit-post, I would have made Part of the Night a trilogy instead of a duology. I hope you enjoy this take on the Nolanverse.

Fave line: "It's like living in a giant aquarium."
What Else I Accomplished Today: Ran the dishwasher, and completely avoided working on the office clean-up.
What I'm looking forward to: Rest of the month: I'm hoping that I'll finally be able to afford what I promised myself I could buy after I paid my car off back in March of last year.

Fave line: "Selina, did you plan on a dead body being down here?"
What Else I Accomplished Today: Hemmed one pair of pants, and it was pulling teeth to make me do that.

What I Accomplished in the Narrative Today: ARGH! I had to retype Chapter Thirty-Eight because I goofed-up and deleted the done version on the flash drive thinking I had already transferred it to the hard drive thanks to opening the hard drive copy and making a minor change and throwing off the last modified date. Changes I had added I had to recreate from memory, so I didn't end up typing that much more in Chapter Thirty Nine.
Fave line: "And if the Riddler or Bane found this potential back door?"
What Else I Accomplished Today: Laundry, primarily, and chipping away at the kitchen.

What I Accomplished in the Narrative Today: Finished the rough draft on January 1st. All I did was play a computer game and write. Then I realized that this series took about a year and a half to write.

I blew the 2nd on blood work, HTML coding Chapter Thirty-Six, correcting the Italian in "Forgiveness," and editing One Rule. So I finally started typing Chapter Thirty-Seven today January 3rd.
Fave line: "Sorry we screwed up having her in the Regency Room, Alfred."
What Else I Accomplished Today: Three hours spent cleaning the kitchen and I'm only half done. :p Seriously, it is the half with the pantry, which I also cleaned out and got rid of food I can't eat. And I also uncovered the table again.

Non-stop rain is what stopped me from relocating the cardboard boxes and various recyclables to the porch or car, which is making the mess in the middle of the room now. The half that is left to do is dishes, which shouldn't take long once I can actually reach them and move the dishwasher around.
What I'm looking forward to: Bathroom, living room, and office are still on the deep clean list. The hall needs a reset from the laundry, and I haven't touched the sewing mess, which I must do to hem the new pants I bought for Christmas and to repair the Victorian Blue Dress before packing it. Yeah, right I'm looking forward to all that.

Okay, I'm looking forward to the clean house at the end of all that.
What I'm not looking forward to: The actual CLEANING I have to do. Plus sorting through the sewing remains and finishing the inventory of the fabric stash as I repack it.

What I Accomplished in the Narrative Today: Wow, I got a lot of words done in between my cooking misadventures.
Fave line: "Well, Admiral Ackbar, looks like we've found the Riddler's trap." – Finally, a pop culture reference that Bruce did get.
What Else I Accomplished Today: So I bought a new cookbook that gave me a chicken pot pie recipe with a crust. WOOT, I can have my favorite food again. It needs six egg whites. I have four eggs. Okay scratched up a dozen with what Mom's chickens laid today. Oh, the Primal eggnog recipe only uses egg yolks, no leftovers. Mix the dry ingredients for the biscuit crust, no problems. Mix the wet ingredients in the blender that I'm already leery of, the jar gets stuck and I end up unscrewing it from the blades and lose half the liquid.

Luckily the dry mix only needed the half I managed to save, but the results only covered half the pie. Mix up more biscuit but put the liquid in the food processor that doesn't leak. Then I have to mix up more dry ingredients since I have the liquid leftover. The biscuits taste great but didn't rise at all.

Done with that, time to use up the egg yolks in eggnog. Cook the egg and milk mixture slowly on low heat for 5 to 10 minutes, but at the five minute mark I didn't think it was thick enough. 10 minutes: scrambled sugar eggs. Second half of the yolks I managed to turn into eggnog.

Now I'm out of eggs and I never got to cook the brownies.
What I'm looking forward to: Bringing order to my house. It'll probably take all four days plus the four days for New Year's to get it done.
What I'm not looking forward to: Sorting through the sewing remains and finishing the inventory of the fabric stash as I repack it.

Fave line: "Either it'll be a chance to laugh when Alfred says I'm doing it all wrong and takes over or good practice for when Stephanie and Tara are old enough for lessons."

What I'm not looking forward to: Giving myself a job that's going to take months.

Seriously, there's the fabric that has been waiting since before July and the paperwork mess in my office that has been waiting for filing for about that long too. It would be great to have one or the other done before New Year's.

What I Accomplished in the Narrative Today: Got a good start on Chapter Thirty-Four.
Fave line: "Sir, was there ever a time when this job was normal?"
What Else I Accomplished Today: NO SEWING! Because I'm finished, I wore the dress, and I can clean the living room.

What I'm looking forward to: Sorting through the sewing remains and finishing the inventory of the fabric stash as I repack it.
What I'm not looking forward to: Giving myself a job that's going to take months.

Seriously, there's the fabric that has been waiting since before July and the paperwork mess in my office that has been waiting for filing for about that long too. It would be great to have one or the other done before New Year's. Okay, let's go back to being ecstatic about no more sewing.

What I Accomplished in the Narrative Today: Dream-version of Riddler inspired by BTAS! And that much closer to the second pinch point.
Fave line: "So Batman as a smokescreen for the Riddler's obsession with Catwoman? Sorry, lover, but he cared less that he had me in his clutches."
What Else I Accomplished Today: ARGH! A typo in the sewing directions meant I spent double the time necessary to move forward because I had to undo everything I had sewed and redo it.
What I'm looking forward to: Finishing sewing at some point this month.
What I'm not looking forward to: Another freezing night.
